Every culture has unique customs and when it comes to dating, it may surprises how different cultures can be. Take Korea for instance, this is a place for lovers. Couples everywhere expressing their love in matching outfits and filling the Seoul tower with beautiful couple padlocks.
Every month has an unofficial couple day in Korea. 14th of every month. This is unheard of in the west. Casual dating doesn’t exist either because you are either in or out. Let’s explore Korean dating and see how it deters from the western culture.
1. It’s All or Nothing
Like stated above, there is nothing like casual dating in Korea. The notion of taking things slowly to see where you end up is not something they relate to. They always looking for serious and committed relationships that have a potential lead to marriage. Of course, some of them do go for casual relationships with foreigners.
However, any no-strings-attached arrangements must stay a secret from families regardless of the time spent together. They can, however, decide to make it official and then, they will introduce the foreigner to the family for approval.
2. Unions aren’t Usually Solely Based On Love
Traditionally, in some countries, marriage unions served as social, economic, or political alliances between the couple’s families. In the past, love had nothing to do with anything.
While time may have changed that, Koreans still feel that they need to follow these traditions to an extent. While they are free to date whoever they want in the modern setting, they take their family’s approval very seriously.
They may not get married to the complete stranger’s parents choose for them, but they cannot mayone someone with the parents’ approval. Parents have the ability to end a relationship, and Koreans never want to disappoint their families. This does not mean that they don’t marry for love, but the union may not be based solely on love.
3. Blind Dates Are The Way To Meet
When in need of a date, Koreans introduce friends to each other. This is like going on a blind date, but with someone, your friends know very well and trust. Unlike the west where you can basically get a date anywhere, approaching people on the streets and asking them out is not common.
The younger generation is always open to meeting strangers though. They have an open mind and its easier to find those who have adapted to the western ways and are not afraid to try porn so you can find Asian nude pics online.
However, most of them rely on introductions to meet their partners. On the other hand, blind dates are usually the last option in the east. People may even wonder what’s wrong with the person if they even need to be introduced.
4. PDA Is Almost Taboo
While you’ll notice couples in matching outfits and cute matching shoes, public display of affection is frowned upon. The furthest they go is holding hands, but a kiss in Korean streets is not tolerated. They view this as a romantic gesture that should be shared by lovers in their own private space, not with everyone.
You might think that the country is very much industrialized and pretty modern, but their culture is still a little traditional and a lot of things done in the west would be frowned upon.
5. Tons of Celebrations
Koreans are very proud of their relationships. They love being in relationships and they celebrate it a lot. In the west, people celebrate Valentine’s day and their yearly anniversary. Well, Korean couples take that to a whole new level because they have a couple of celebrations on every 14th of each month. They may celebrate 100 days of being together, and follow that up with the next hundred days, and the next.
While men in the west complain about remembering to buy flowers for the anniversary, men in Korea need to remember so many of them it’s actually impressive how they keep up. It can get quite stressful, and expensive because the girls still need gifts and the infamous ring they have to get after the first 100 days in the relationship.
6. Couple Outfits Are A Total Norm
If you walked around in couple shirts in the west chances are you’ll find yourselves in YouTube as the mushy couple. In Korean dating, however, this is completely normal and hundreds of other couples are rocking matching outfits as well.
Couple outfits are sold everywhere including shirts, sneakers, caps, jewelry and even things like pillows. It’s like couples live in their own world of cuteness and the whole country is in on it. Restaurants have special menus for couples, movie theaters have private couple couches, and attractions have couple packages for intimate dates.
If you are thinking of dating in Korea, prepare yourself to be sweet, cutesy and to have fun. Most people in the west don’t have tolerance for such sweetness.
7. Korean Smartphones Never Stay Far Away
This may not be very different from the west because a majority of people are spending 80% of their time locked on their mobile screens. However, people in the west believe in the three-day rule where they wait till three days before they call their date.
In Korea dating, you can forget all about that because instant messages and adorable emojis are what they send to their partners most of the day. If you date in Korea, don’t be surprised in messages come every two hours asking the corniest of things, from what you are doing, eating, drinking, or even thinking.
8. Chivalry Is Still Alive In Korean Dating
Korean men are more attentive and interested in women than western men. This may be due to the fact that expectations from their ladies are usually very high. It may also be due to the fact that they don’t date casually and are looking to take their relationships to marriage. They are the epitome of good boyfriends.
Women all over the world love being showered with attention and being taken care of and if a man is going to carry your bag and offer you his coat when it’s cold, you’ll absolutely love it. This is what women should expect from Korean men. They are attentive and chivalrous.
